St. George Renovation 2008

Through its proud history, tens of thousands of Greek Orthodox faithful have celebrated rites of passage in our beloved church, St. George.  They professed their love before God in the sacrament of marriage, presented children to God in the sacrament of holy baptism, and expressed a final farewell to loved ones.  The church is central to the spiritual life of our parishioners and has been a gathering place of prayer and worship for over 100 years.

As parishioners of St. George, we have much to be thankful for and much to be proud of.  We are a vibrant, engaged, active Greek Orthodox parish and we are entering an exciting new chapter in our history: the modernization of the church structure.  We want parishioners to view our church as their second home--and to be proud of it.

Our renovation projects have proven to be a worthy undertaking. For anyone who owns property, particularly a building like our church--a public space that is 56 years old--it is fact that continuous maintenance and major repairs are a necessity.  A French drainage system ended forty years of flooding.  Bathrooms below the narthex and offices are renovated and our revamped banquet room includes the addition of a new kitchen.  Classrooms are painted in vibrant colors and we now have a recreation room with couches, ping-pong tables, a pool table, air hockey and a television so that our youth can gather.  We created a library, a media center and a conference room.  Beautiful Byzantine Icons grace the Iconostasion and the Exonarthax, the new entrance to the Church, is almost complete.  St. George will be a beacon of Orthodoxy in the community.

Our goal is to not only to ensure that the building is clean, but that it is capable of meeting the needs of our parish for years to come. The Agganis Auditorium renovation will provide a showplace for our annual basketball Tournament and will be transformed into a beautiful, convenient venue for catered memorial luncheons, receptions, and social events.

St. George is more than bricks and cement. Our church is the connection to the past and serves as a gateway to future generations. This year we experienced a 60% increase in Greek School enrollment.  The energy in the church is tremendous and involvement is at all-time high.  By investing in programs for our parishioners, St. George is taking active measures to keep our faith, language and heritage alive.   The demand for these programs is rapidly growing and the building modernization will ensure that we are capable of meeting these growing demands.

Our collective desire to preserve our Greek language, Hellenic traditions and Orthodox values can only be achieved by passing the torch of wisdom and light to future generations.  We are excited that you will be part of this legacy and are eager to share our progress with you in the months to come.

Best regards,
